MPC’s 2019-20 Young Adult Volunteer
(YAV) Clara Hare-Grogg
Congratulations Clara. Faith at work! Imagine you are writing to friends, as Clara has, and saying, “While I do not yet know the exact location or partner organization with which I will work, I am excited for this upcoming year in the Philippines.”
MPC member Clara Hare-Grogg has accepted a call into the YAV program of PC(USA)’s World Mission Agency. Our denomination website states, “YAVs accompany local agencies working to address root causes of poverty and reconciliation. Alongside this work, volunteers explore the meaning of their Christian faith and accountability to their neighbors in community with peers and mentors.”
Clara shares, “During my time at Davidson College, my studies in anthropology led to an interest in reproductive health. I spent a summer working with one of my professors to advocate for breastfeeding-friendly business practices in the town of Davidson. I also spent a semester in Nepal, where I studied health resources and cultural and religious taboos relating to menstrual health. I am interested in learning about similarly gendered health issues in the Philippines, and I am especially curious to learn about intersections between people’s beliefs about health and faith. I’m hoping to use music as an informal way to foster cultural exchanges and meaningful connections with the people I meet in the Philippines. I will keep you updated as I learn more about my call. Thank you so much for your prayers and financial help!”
How You Can Help
Clara is responsible for raising $5,000 of the estimated $24,000 total cost for the program year. Should you wish to make a personal donation, the YAV program requests that online donations be made to Clara’s specific webpage here.
Donations will be received immediately. Clara’s personal identification number for YAV donations is E210503. It is most helpful to write this identifier on all donations made to the website or if making a gift by check. This will help the YAV office to keep track of Clara’s personal fundraising.
Donations made by check should be made out to “PC(USA)” and include the identifier E210503. Send to: Presbyterian Church (USA), PO Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700.
In case you did not know, this is an all-in-the-family story. Vivian Hare was an instrumental part of the team that created the YAV program in the 1990’s while serving our denomination as director of the Mission Volunteer (USA) Program in Louisville.
